Meet the dyes that inspire us!
Natural dyes come from a wide variety of sources, leaves, flowers, bark, roots, and even insects. We decided to feature a few of our favorite dyes so you can see the ingredients that make the magic possible!
Cosmos: these vibrant flowers make beautiful oranges, yellows, and even purples!
Black Walnut: black walnuts aren't just for eating! The hulls of these nuts make beautiful browns and caramel colors.
Indigo: indigo is the queen of natural dyes. This magical blue can be found in a variety of plants, but it is one of the only stable sources of natural blue . Synthetic indigo is still used to dye blue jeans because nothing mimics the beautiful wear patterns.
Madder: madder is the source of beautiful reds and pinks. The roots from this little shrub can create anything from coral pink to brick to fire engine red.
Coreopsis: coreopsis flowers might look familiar to all our Oklahoma friends! This native wildflower creates reds, oranges, golds, and yellows depending on how you treat it! It also makes stunning prints.
Cochineal: did you know insects could make pink? Cochineal can! Tiny cochineal bugs live on the pads of prickly pear cacti. They also make magnificent pinks and purples depending on the pH of your water!
